Vector Ice Cream Riding Bike
I saw something like this and thought it might be a fun idea. For this project, I was to make a vector bike. I made two bikes, one over the summer and one in October. I will first talk about the one I made in October, the Ice Cream riding a bike. I am not as good at making something look like a cartoon and still look great, so I wanted to try it for this project. These are some of the sketches that started me off:
You can see the progression of my ideas turning from realistic, to very cartoony. There were a lot of different ideas that I liked, but ultimately I liked the idea of an ice cream cone riding down this hill on his bike, and started playing with that. It turns out being simple is harder than I thought. Here was my halfway draft.
The feedback I received was in support with the idea that simple is hard for me. I needed to add more. The lines on the cone are crazy, the bike is too simple, and it’s just blah. I wanted to add some more simple details to try and bring out some sophistication. After some more tweaking, this vector came to life.
Though it could still use improvement, I am happy with my progression from beginning to end. I was able to get a vector bike to look like it was in motion and to have some fun details, and I added a subtle scene to add to the drama of what is happening. I wanted my vector to tell a story, and I feel that it did.
The second bike I wanted to look pretty realistic. This seems easier to me, since I am a photographer, and I take pictures of real things all the time. So after hours of tweaking and playing with it, this is the final product.
