Topic and Sketches
This project was really interesting. We were given an article, and had to design a gig poster based off of that article. The article that we were given can be found here.
We then had to make a word list and write down a bunch of words that came to our mind. I knew a lot of people would play off of the DNA idea, or at least that it was an obvious answer, so I wanted to go a little deeper. The following was the sketches and words that I came up with.
I loved the idea of something that normally goes away with time, but it is actually building on itself, and came up with the reverse melting candle. So instead of a candle that is burning down, the wax is melting upward. This symbolized the reverse again scientific research that is being done as the article mentioned. I started my draft in black and white, and quickly changed it to the colors I wanted to use since I would have to go back and redo it all anyway. I limited myself to 5 colors. Two shades of brown, red, black, and white. The following is the draft that Iw as able to come up with.
By the time I finished my product, I show up to my class and my amazing teacher Brother Kerr waited until the last day of class to show me a quick and easy way to make a 3D shape. Too little too late. I do appreciate having to learn how to do this the hard way because it made me think about shadows and highlights on round objects like I wouldn’t have had to do if I had used the 3D object method. I continued to work on the candle, and made sure I only used those 5 colors and came up with this final object! I think it reflects the story in a unique and creative way, and it really tested my skills using Illustrator 5.5 and it’s limited skills to get my gradients and shapes correct.
